How ChatGPT Can Help Estimate Your PD

Posted by Stephanie Petchers on

Technology is changing the way people shop for eyewear.

Customers are already using ChatGPT to help identify their face shape, better understand fit, and even discover which colors complement them best through seasonal color analysis.

Because let’s be honest — we all want to look and feel our best.

Now, many customers are also discovering that AI can help estimate another important part of ordering prescription eyewear online: PD.

PD, or pupillary distance, is the measurement between your pupils that helps properly position your lenses within your frames. While it’s a small number, it plays an important role in how prescription eyewear feels and performs.

And for many people shopping online, having access to that information feels empowering.

A Simpler Way to Estimate PD from Home

With a clear photo and the right reference point, AI tools like ChatGPT can often help provide a surprisingly close PD estimate from home.

The process itself is simple.

Take a straight-on photo in natural lighting. Pull your hair back, keep your expression neutral, and avoid tilting your head.

Then place a standard-sized credit card just beneath your nose while taking the photo and be sure it is touching your face.

That small detail matters more than most people realize. Since credit cards follow universal sizing standards, they give AI tools a reliable point of scale when estimating measurements.

Combined with a clear image, it creates a much stronger reference point for estimating PD more accurately.

Of course, it’s still important to understand that this is an estimate, not a replacement for a professional optical measurement. But for many customers, it can be an incredibly helpful starting point when shopping for prescription eyewear online.

Eyewear Is Becoming More Personal

What’s especially interesting is how customers are beginning to use technology in a more personal and intuitive way.

They’re using AI not only to help estimate their PD, but also to better understand which eyewear shapes balance their features, which frame colors complement their skin tone, and which styles feel most natural on their face.

Customers are also beginning to experiment with uploading both their photo and frame images into ChatGPT to better visualize style, scale, and overall fit before ordering. Simply ask ChatGPT to place the frame on your face and generate an image. For the most accurate representation, be sure to instruct ChatGPT not to alter the original shape of the frame.

At Velvet Eyewear®, this aligns with the philosophy we’ve believed in for years: shopping becomes easier when you understand your proportions, your color harmony, and your natural features.

Knowledge is powerful.

And sometimes, having the right information can save an incredible amount of time.

The Future of Eyewear Feels More Intuitive

For years, shopping for eyewear often felt overwhelming. Today, technology is helping make the process feel simpler, more informed, and more approachable.

AI tools like ChatGPT are helping customers better understand fit, face shape, seasonal color palettes, and even measurements from home — making it easier to shop with confidence.

More informed. More personal. More intuitive.

And honestly, that feels like progress.
